Imagine Port Lincoln
without the railway lines, the silos and the fuel tanks and with the
parklands back in place as originally envisaged by Colonel Light in the
1800’s. His vision had Liverpool Street extending directly to Kirton
Point and through to Proper Bay providing connection with the Marina.
This is the future for
Port Lincoln also envisaged by Member for Flinders Liz Penfold who
outlined the possibilities in a letter to Premier Rann.
Land would be opened up
for tourism, housing and the coastline for boats, yachts and possibly
another marina close to the city’s centre.
“With the mining
industry knocking at our door, there never was, nor possibly ever will be,
a better time for people to look at our city and work out where we want it
to be in the future.”
“Decisions that were made
in the past, for good reasons at the time, are no longer the right ones
for our future and should be re-examined before we compound the
problems,” Mrs. Penfold said
Mrs Penfold has asked the Premier to make a
submission for assistance through the Federal Government’s $20 billion
‘Building Australia Future” fund that combined with funds from the
existing stakeholders, Flinders Ports, ABB, Gennesse Wyoming, Mining
Companies, fishing companies and the State Government and land sales,
could be used to relocate existing infrastructure and build more at a new
joint usage port, north of Port Lincoln and south of Port Neil.
A copy of the submission can be downloaded
from the Reports Page on this site.
