PUBLIC HOLIDAY – THE CHOICE IS YOURS
27 November 2002

Port Lincoln will be able to declare a holiday for the Port Lincoln races in lieu of the Adelaide Cup holiday, while other district councils may choose to nominate a day to suit their own festivals or join with Port Lincoln.

Member for Flinders Liz Penfold has succeeded in getting Eyre Peninsula included in amendments to the Adelaide Cup and Volunteers Day Bill.

“I am delighted as I believe this change would add focus to the many significant festivals that are held on Eyre Peninsula.

“It gives our region the ability to engage a whole district in an event, an advantage that the city has enjoyed for years,” she said.

The former Liberal State Government raised the issue when in office.  The amendment to the Adelaide Cup and Volunteers Day Bill was rejected by the current Labor State Government when Mrs Penfold first proposed it in the House of Assembly.  The amendment was reinstated in the Legislative Council and then accepted by the Government.

Mrs Penfold said her original amendment focussed on the Port Lincoln Racing Club carnival in March.

“I am aware of the great financial benefit that the carnival brings to Port Lincoln.

“I included all councils on Eyre Peninsula since the region already has a number of major events that may be expanded by the adoption of a public holiday that has more relevance to a region than the Adelaide Cup Day holiday.  It gives Eyre Peninsula the opportunity to decide what is best for our region and not be required to follow the city.

“I thank all the people who supported the amendment and who provided statistics to back up arguments,” she said.

“Together, we have achieved a win.”
