BUDGET 2001-02 TOURISM Infrastructure at the Head of the Bight will be developed with an additional $0.8 million allocated in the State Budget. Member for Flinders Liz Penfold said the projects would be undertaken through consultation with local community and indigenous groups. “Head of the Bight, part of the newly proclaimed Great Australian Bight Marine Park, has become internationally renowned as one of the best Southern Right Whale viewing areas in the world,” she said. The newly created Gawler Ranges National Park will receive $200,000 to establish visitor infrastructure and services in the park. Mrs Penfold said that 45% of international visitors reported that nature-based tourism is a major drawcard for holidaying in Australia. “We can lift regional employment and services by capitalising on our spectacular wilderness and wildlife, and by further developing nature tourism experiences.” Funding of $4.5 million will boost intrastate and international tourism campaigns over the next two years to aggressively market South Australia as a tourist destination. The intrastate market is worth $1.3 billion, but South Australians still spend $870 million on holidays outside the State. |
