2001-02 BUDGET EDUCATION
5 JUNE 2001

Member for Flinders Liz Penfold said funding for building upgrades and education programs continues the Liberal Government’s strong support for education.

“I am delighted with the $250,000 of a $5 million replacement and upgrade of buildings as the first stage of Ceduna Area School redevelopment,” she said.

Mrs Penfold said the student-teacher ratio of 14.6 in South Australian schools is the best of mainland Australia and reflects the Liberal Government’s commitment to education.

Spending on Eyre Peninsula includes:

·                $371,000 to continue work to relocate Cleve Pre-School

·                $292,000 to continue the upgrade program for the science laboratory at Wudinna Area School

·                $50,000 to complete the upgrade of Kirton Point Primary School

·                $100,000 ongoing program to upgrade Port Lincoln Primary School.

Mrs Penfold said the highly successful literacy program will be expanded into more primary schools through an injection of $5.6 million over four years.

This comes on top of the almost $2 million provided to all primary schools earlier this year to assist in the delivery of literacy and numeracy education programs.

Improving the health of young South Australian school students will be the focus of a new $16 million physical education program.

The program will increase the regular physical activity of students, also will support teachers in upgrading their skills and knowledge in teaching physical education.
