About Liz

Liz former Member of State Parliament for Flinders electorate covering Eyre Peninsula

I relished the challenge of representing the people of the Flinders electorate into the 21st Century and I am looking forward to continuing my involvement in a different role.  Since retiring from politics I have graduated from the Australian Institute of Company Directors and registered as a lobbyist with the South Australian Government.

I was born at Cleve on Eyre Peninsula, to parents Jack and Meryl Carman. I attended Lock school until grade seven and later furthered my education at Port Lincoln High School where I boarded at the Bush Church Aid Hostel. I later trained as a teacher in Adelaide.

As a bonded teacher, I taught at Tumby Bay where I met and later married Geoff Penfold. We moved to Adelaide for a short time and then went to Papua New Guinea where we spent six and a half years working as public servants. For a time I was in control of purchasing, stock control and contracts for Posts and Telegraphs, in Port Moresby. As I was a married woman my job had to be advertised every Government Gazette with no suitable applicant ever being found! We transfered to Goroka where our daughters Susan and Katrina were born and I worked part time in the library for the Institute of Medial Research.

I continued to study by correspondence through the University of Queensland where I studied politics. Back in Port Lincoln in 1975 we started an accountancy practice. I later began my own business Profitech Management Services and assisted with the development of one of the very first point of sale systems for business cash registers to assist with stock control in small businesses. I passed the Real Estate Sales course and taught running a small buiness for a while at the local TAFE.

We are still married, our girls both have degrees one is completing her Masters in International Management and the other has provided us with two grandchildren. Geoff has retired from accounting and is now the Managing Director of Southern Australian Seafoods, green lip abalone farm at Boston Point near Port Lincoln.  In March 2010 I retired after sixteen years representing the Flinders electorate in State Parliament.

  • To consistently build employment, education, health and family relationships
  • To work for the positive benefit of the people of the Flinders electorate in harmony with business, Local, State and Federal governments
  • To help provide balanced management of the region and the environment
